Other Projects
A dynamic speaker, Joe Serio brings a lifetime of incredibly diverse experiences to every one of his presentations. Here are just a few of the other interesting worlds he has lived in or peeked into over the years.
— Raised in a family of 12 kids, Joe grew up outside New York City and lived the “cheaper by the dozen” reality, observing and recording years of experiences and lessons learned.
— He lived among the Chinese in the People’s Republic of China before and during the vast changes and great influx of foreigners. He studied Chinese, traveled the country, gave lectures in a secret Chinese security institute, and got a firsthand look at how the Chinese live.
— As an amateur musician, he has played the harmonica at a house party in Paris, in a night club in London, at a police barbeque in Warsaw, at a police academy in Barcelona, for KGB agents in Moscow, and for prison wardens in Texas. He got his start playing in a Russian rock ‘n roll band in the late ‘90s.
— He arranged for a Hollywood production company to get inside Russian prisons to shoot a documentary for A&E’s Investigative Reports.
— Before the collapse of the Soviet Union, he got access to and translated from Russian into English a book of secret crime statistics prepared specially for Gorbachev and the other Soviet leaders.
— He drove a taxi in New York, meeting a variety of interesting, joyful, sad, and desperate passengers along the way.
— For six years he has been the editor of Crime and Justice International. Hailed by readers as an important publication, CJI can be found in the libraries of top law enforcement officials, police academies, and universities around the world.
— He’s been quoted and cited in newspapers, reports, and textbooks around the world. His writing has been required reading in universities of foreign countries.
— He has studied the underlying reasons for fear and has gone to great lengths to understand and triumph over his own fears.
